Overview:
Mold spores exist everywhere on the planet. They do a great job of breaking down organic materials in the outdoors. Without mold, the leaves that fall from the trees would take over the earth! However, when mold starts to grow inside your home, that is a problem! Mold if a fungi that needs organic matter, oxygen and mositure to grow. The moisture in homes is usually due to leaks in basement walls or windows, roofs, appliances or pipes. Sump Pump failure is another major cause of mold in Minnesota. Mold can start to grow in as little as 48 hours. Over-humified homes can cause mold to grow in the absense of a specific source of water intrusion. If it's growing in your house, it means it's eating your house! It can also be harmful to your health. Mold comes in all different textures and colors. Some mold is visible - sometimes it hides in carpets, behind panelliing, etc. Sometimes you can smell it, other times you can't. Sometimes what looks like mold is not...other times what looks like dust or cobwebs is mold. The best way to find out if you have a mold issue is to have your home tested by a mold professional. The inspecitons performed by Minnesota Mold Inspection are non-invasive inspections that include a visual check of the home, inside and out, as well as sampling of suspect areas (things that look like mold) and air sampling (taking air samples to check for an elevated level of spores). A moisture meter is also used to determine if walls are wet A moisture meter can often help determine the source of the moisture. The good news is that mold can be safely removed by reputable remediators. It is important, however, to stop the source of moisture so it doen't grow back! I do not do remediation, but can refer you to several great remediators. Inspection and remediation should be performed by independent companies. The first step is hiring an inspector to assess your situation. You will receive a written report that explains how much mold was found, what type of mold exists and what should be done next. I got into this business because my son is an asthmatic who is extremely allergic to mold. I know just how many homes have mold (including some in my own family!) and how little mold it takes to trigger a reaction in my son. I'm not out to scare you about mold -- I'm out to help you!
